Marble, Serpentines and Onyxes are traditionally prized for their aesthetic appeal, accentuated by pronounced veining trends and often bold colours.

Marble is a calcium carbonate-based, metamorphic stone formed by the re-crystallization of limestone under intense geological pressure and heat.

There are two types of marble, calcite and dolomite. The existence of these two substances in minor amounts during rock formation cause the veining, clouds and mottled shading found in marble. This textured effect can vary from very fine uniform grains to large random crystals of calcite.

The marble colour is determined by the mineral composition and can vary from brilliant white through to black, and include shades of blue-grey, red, yellow and green.

Abrasion Resistance

Marble is susceptible to abrasion attack, which occurs most commonly from common kitchen utensils, and can be prevented with judicious use of protective cutting boards and similar measures. The use of cleaners containing abrasives must be avoided.

Chemical Resistance

Chemical attack is most commonly brought about by exposure to acidic solutions, such as lemon juice, juice of tomatoes, vinegar etc. The use of inappropriate cleaning agents can cause acidic attack.

The application of a sealer may reduce the vulnerability to acidic attack, but will not eliminate it completely. Honed marble is less porous than polished marble.
