Limestone rocks are sedimentary rocks made from mineral calcite, which is found in the beds of evaporated seas and lakes.

Limestone is calcareous rock made up of carbonate in the form of calcite, aragonite, or dolomite. A large proportion of limestone is biogenic (containing fossil material).

Another well known building limestone is Travertine, a chemically deposited limestone that is less chalky and provides more colour and strength.

Limestone can be polished, honed, sand blasted or brush hammered and comes in a broad range of natural hues, grey/buff, cream/tan and bone/white.

Abrasion Resistance

Limestone and Travertine are susceptible to abrasion attack, particularly with provided with a polished finish. Abrasion damage occurs most commonly from common kitchen utensils, and can be prevented with judicious use of protective cutting boards and similar measures. The use of cleaners containing abrasives must be avoided.

Chemical Resistance

Chemical attack is most commonly brought about by exposure to acidic solutions, such as lemon juice, juice of tomatoes, vinegar etc. The use of inappropriate cleaning agents can cause acidic attack.

Stain Resistance

Limestone and Travertine like stone have high absorption rates, and commonly, a sealer can be applied to help retard the rate of water absorption into the stone.
